The city of Bansko is ready to host for the fifteenth consecutive year one of the most emblematic cultural events in Bulgaria – Bansko Opera Fest 2024. The cultural forum will be held on August 30 and 31 at the central square “Nikola Vaptsarov”, where fans of classical music will enjoy exciting performances under the open sky, the organizers say. This year’s program includes the popular musical “Spirit” on August 30, followed on August 31 by the iconic opera “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi, performed by the Varna State Opera. The start time of the performances is 20:30, and the entrance to the event is free, which provides a unique opportunity for the residents and guests of Bansko to immerse themselves in the magic of the opera.
The popular musical “Ghost” is based on the 1990 film of the same name starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. The music is by Dave Stewart and Glenn Ballard, with Bruce Joel Rubin joining them to write the libretto. It premiered in 2011 in Manchester, immediately after that the show quickly conquered the stages of the West End and Broadway. The plot, which sets the themes of good and evil, hope and love that conquers even death, is accompanied by the iconic song “Unchained Melody”. The captivating production tells the story of lovers Sam and Molly, combining romance, mystery and thriller.
The Bulgarian adaptation is directed by Srebrina Sokolova, conducted by Stracimir Pavlov. The scenography and visual effects are the work of “Ikar” award winner Petko Tanchev, and the costumes are designed by Asya Stoimenova. The choreography, created by Nadia Dimokova, makes people and spirits dance on stage in a unique way, and the lighting design is by Daniel Yovkov. In Bulgaria “Ghost” is presented through a special agreement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.
On August 31, the festival presents the classic opera “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi. The work belongs to Verdi’s famous trilogy, which also includes Rigoletto and Troubadour. The libretto of La Traviata was written by Verdi’s collaborator Francesco Maria Piave based on the celebrated novel The Lady with the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas-son. It is known that the plot of the novel was based on the author’s personal drama, the story of his love for the famous courtesan Marie Duplessis.
The director of the opera production is Kuzman Popov, the conductor is Svetoslav Borisov. In the solo composition of “La Traviata” we find the magnificent Ilina Mihailova, in the role of Violetta, Flora will be played by Milena Zaharieva. With his characteristic temperament and radiance, the Venezuelan tenor Reynaldo Droz convincingly transforms into the image of Alfred Germont, Ivo Yordanov is in the role of Georges Germont. With the participation of the choir and orchestra of the Varna State Opera.
