The mafia boss returns from Brazil for Easter lunch, arrested – Corriere.it

Investigators consider him the regent of the historic Pagliarelli district of Palermo. He had been commuting between Brazil and Sicily for a long time. But the Easter lunch was fatal and Giuseppe Calvaruso was arrested. In the same operation, called «Brevis», four other people were arrested. They are Giovanni Caruso, Silvestre Maniscalco, Francesco Paolo Bagnasco and Giovanni Spanò: they are accused in various ways of mafia association, extortion, personal injury, kidnapping, fictitious registration of assets, all crimes aggravated by the mafia method and modalities. For the carabinieri, Calvaruso, 43 years and a sentence behind him, he would become the regent of the Pagliarelli mafia “mandamento” after the arrest of the boss Settimo Mineo (the one who presided over the meeting of the new “cupola” of Cosa Nostra), who was arrested two years ago.

In Brazil for some time

Calvaruso had recently moved to Brazil – like the historic boss then collaborator of justice Tommaso Buscetta – delegating the management of the affairs of the clans to the loyalists. Caruso would have been his contact person in Palermo. According to the investigators, the alleged boss would have maintained relations and meetings with the leaders of the Mafia districts of Porta Nuova, Noce, Villabate, Belmonte Mezzagno for business negotiations. Furthermore, he would have spent to keep the Mafia inmates, he would have been interested in matters of “public order” in the territory (for example with a beating to the perpetrators of some robberies not authorized by Cosa Nostra after the victim had addressed the clan directly). And in the investigation there is also the usual pathological repertoire of a drugged economy in which Cosa Nostra takes on a role of reference for traders and entrepreneurs who turned to the mafia to obtain authorizations for the opening of commercial activities or to resolve disputes and disputes. And there are also extortion. According to investigators, Calvaruso would have accumulated huge capital that he would have reinvested in the construction and catering sector. To avoid the seizure of assets, he would have created a dense network of figureheads. The provision was issued dto the prosecutors Federica La Chioma and Dario Scaletta, coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Salvatore De Luca of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Palermo.

The perpetrators of unauthorized robberies and thefts have been identified and punished

The clan ruled the Palermo neighborhood in various ways. Traders and entrepreneurs turned to Cosa Nostra to obtain authorizations for the opening of commercial activities or to resolve disputes and disputes: according to investigators, the mafia organization would have taken on, according to a consolidated tradition, a pathological alternate function with respect to state institutions. It emerges from the investigation by the Palermo dda which today led to the arrest of bosses and followers of the Pagliarelli mafia family. The clan would be asked to identify and punish the perpetrators of robberies committed without the clan’s approval, find and return a stolen car to owners, authorize the opening of new businesses. The investigations have reconstructed the beating of a robber who allegedly committed two shots not authorized by the mafia family. The owner of a detergent resale, after two robberies suffered over 5 days, would have turned to the men of Cosa Nostra to identify those responsible and get back the stolen money. The entrepreneur would have asked for the intervention of Giovanni Caruso, among those arrested, to whom he would have delivered the images shot by the video surveillance system during the robberies suffered on 29 August and 3 September 2019. The robbers were identified by the gang and the creator of the shots was lured into a garage, and beaten to death even in the presence of the boss Calvaruso. Caruso would also have been contacted by another merchant to find a stolen Lancia Y.

The “forced” restructuring

Not only. The extortion of mafia bosses in the form of the renovation of properties “to be bought”. “The extortion conducts – say the investigators – were all aimed at forcing the ownership of the buildings to be purchased and renovated, to contact the construction companies actually owned by Calvaruso”

Recycling in Singapore

Calvaruso would have accumulated huge capital which he would have reinvested in the construction and catering sector. It emerges from the investigation that led to the arrest of the boss. To avoid the seizure of assets, he would have created a dense network of loyal nominees to try to protect his assets. The military speak of a “notable entrepreneurial habit of the head of the district” which was hunting for capital flows from foreign investors. In particular, Calvaruso would have done business with a Singapore citizen interested in investing large capital in the construction and tourism-hotel sector in Sicily. The investigation also revealed a series of extortions aimed at forcing the owners of properties undergoing renovations to turn to construction companies actually owned by Calvaruso for the works.
