From Madrid, C. Tangana begins the talk by sharing his happiness for him effect it has had with The Madrileño, his most recent album. On the Spotify charts, with 5,170 streams within 24 hours of its production being released, it became the best debut of an Iberian artist. Today, his most listened to song, “You stopped loving me,” has more than 116 million listens.
“I am very happy,” he says. And he confirms that he was not wrong when he decided to take a fundamental step in his career to achieve his goal in music, bordered mainly by the effect of the pandemic; his plans were to make another urban album, but when he was at home he reflected on the idea of turning his work around.
“I was afraid of reaching 30 because being a young rapper is over, and I was wondering if I should continue the same, doing the same things, in the same places in the world; suddenly I came up with this adventure of all genres that I like and have always loved ”, he says referring to The Madrilenian, whose 14 tracks have made it into Spotify’s top 50 list.
“Rap is something that belongs to the youth, and I had the concern to transcend as an artist in several generations, not only in the youth. I wanted to show myself that I am a true composer, that I could measure myself face to face with the great composers and with the great musicians of my time and of other generations; that’s my goal with this album ”.
Collaborations
The Madrileño has the participation of Jorge Drexler, Andrés Calamaro and Eliades Ochoa, among other musicians and composers, who materialized the desire of the Spanish, who confesses that the taste and passion for these artists was influenced by his father.
“In this album there is a lot of music that has to do with my time as a teenager and pre-adolescent, with those songs that my father used to play, those mythical records by Jorge Drexler, from Calamaro; This album reflects well what I listened to when I was little and how I got into music ”, he recalls by phone.
Tangana explains that she did not totally put aside her passion for music that is part of her generation.
“The idea was to also collaborate with young artists who approach the public from a different perspective, such as Ed Maverick or Carin León, who do not make urban music that is in discos or is in trend, but who cross the world and travel for all sides, doing something different ”.
The singer highlights that his best collaboration was “with Eliades Ochoa, because everything that has happened in Cuba is a reference to Latin music, the music and lyrics that came from Spain are combined with Latin music; there is a very strong connection with Cuba, which is the origin of what we now enjoy. That Eliades gave me the good and valued my way of writing and composing was a turning point to dare to knock on the door of other equally great artists. Besides it was a very strong twinning, I met their family and I felt very at home with them ”.
“I am a man who likes simple pleasures: eating well, a quiet life and family; I don’t have other big hobbies ”.
