– I learn a lot of new things, and then you have to be a little patient because it takes time before everything falls into place. Which is good because it’s a new challenge, it continues.
– As Henrik retired a few years before me, we had a conversation about this before I retired. Because it really is a new life to be structured, and lots of new things to learn. At the same time, we are grateful that we ourselves can control our time and what projects we do, says Joel Lundqvist.
Henrik is after his hockey career among other things, he worked as an expert commentator on American television at NHL games and joined a sports research project in Gothenburg which, among others, also includes Chalmers universities and Gothenburg.
Joel has been an expert in the TV4 hockey studio and gives talks to companies on the subject of “Winning leadership”.
– Since most things in the world of sport are based on results, you and everyone around you know if you have done something well or not. Now we do things where it’s more about emotion. When Joel gives a speech, he can indeed feel whether it has gone well or not, but it is more of an idea than an actual result. So today it’s probably more about finding the right feeling than being the best, if that makes sense, add Henrik Lundqvist.
What was the hardest part of finding your way in life after your sports career?
– Life is more complicated now. When he was playing, he was more boxy inside, which in itself gave a sense of security. Now life is much more fluid. It is true that there are many things going on, but you also have a lot of time. But because I think I’m in a good place in my life, maybe the complex is not really that difficult, just different, says Henrik Lundqvist with a smile.
When we talk at via Teams, Joel Lundqvist stands at a soccer field in Landvetter.
– It’s a cup of peace, that’s why I’m standing here next to a field of grass, he said with a smile.
Henrik’s twin brother is in Gothenburg.
– I will stay here for a few more days before I go back to New York, he says.
From the normal hockey life, Henrik and Joel Lundqvist now have more freedom, which also gives opportunities to meet more often.
– Yes, we are both in a place now where we can do more things, and travel more. During his career, he was – apart from the summers – more locked up. We appreciate every chance we get to just hang out. It’s not something we take for granted, but it’s always just as wonderful, says Henrik Lundqvist.
Time together It was a strong reason that the twins agreed to collaborate with a clothing company.
– I have run a boarding school for a long time, but for the last 14 years we have run a hockey school together, so we have had that project before. But apart from that, we didn’t have that many projects, says Henrik Lundqvist.
– No, and that was a big part of why this felt right. Now we had to do something together in the life we have in front of us, says Joel Lundqvist.
When it also turned out that Åre was a good place to shoot the first commercial, well, that was the icing on the cake, so to speak.
– That’s where we come from, and you get a nice feeling when you think back on the years in Åre and the security you felt when you grew up there. So being there with Joel was very beneficial, says Henrik Lundqvist.
The Lundqvist twinswho is 42 years old today, eleven years old when the family moved from Åre to Ängelholm. As teenagers, Joel and Henrik then moved to Gothenburg to start high school hockey. This was the starting point for their long and successful hockey careers.
When Joel is still relatively inexperienced as a hockey pensioner, his career ended in the spring of 2023, Henrik has had a few more years to find his way in life after sports. A congenital heart defect caused him to end his career prematurely. He played his last game in the spring of 2020.
Although their time as hockey professionals is over, the sport is still very much present in their lives. In addition to working as expert television reporters, they are also sports parents.
In other words, it is no coincidence that father of three, Joel Lundqvist, is at a football cup when we speak.
– Yesterday I had an all-day start with the hockey club where I am the director, and today, as I said, it will be a full day here, says Joel Lundqvist and laughs.
Henrik’s two daughters have also found their sport.
– My daughters do gymnastics. There it is not like football and hockey where there are competitions every weekend, but usually there are six main competitions – or meets as they are called – every year. Then all you have to do is get in the car and then it’s a whole day. Which is just fun.
– As a parent, you want the children to have passion. Something that motivates them, and something that they have to fight and work to succeed in getting better that teaches them the value of spending time and focusing on something while they have fun doing it.
Even if the elite positions over, the fathers also make sure they stay physically active, and life without hockey has given them the opportunity to return to an old passion.
– I like that I’m back in skiingagain after 20 years. Something that was not possible before due to the risk of injury. It gives me so much joy, peace. I usually say that it is good to have the soul up on the mountain, says Henrik Lundqvist.
– I agree with what Henrik says about skiing. But overall, we are an active family that likes to move around, said Joel Lundqvist.
