The Lunar Eclipse and Bloody Full Moon: Time, Visibility, and Weather Conditions

The lunar eclipse accompanying October’s full moon will occur this evening. This is a penumbral eclipse, which means that only a part of the disk of the Silver Globe will “disappear”. Check what time and where the conditions for observing this phenomenon will be best. Unfortunately, the weather will make this difficult in many places.

On the night of October 28-29, it is worth looking towards the Moon. The sky over Poland will be illuminated by the Bloody Full Moon, also known as the Hunters’ Full Moon. This year it will coincide with a partial, penumbral eclipse of our natural satellite.

Moon eclipse. When will it be visible

The phenomenon will begin at 8:02 p.m. in the form of a penumbral eclipse, and at At 9:35 p.m., the Moon’s disk will begin to enter the Earth’s shadow. The maximum phase will take place at 22.15. The show will end around 00.26.

What about the weather?

The weather in most of Poland will not be favorable for observations. The sky will be mostly cloudy. As tvnmeteo.pl forecaster Arleta Unton-Pyziołek explained, an atmospheric front zone is passing over our country on Saturday, stretching over many regions and moving towards the north-east.

In the evening hours, there will be some possible showers everywhere, but people in Silesia, Lesser Poland and Podkarpacie will be most privileged to observe the eclipse. There, the clouds are supposed to reveal the sky for longer, so the chances of seeing the Silver Globe will be greatest.

Eclipses come in pairs

– Eclipses like to come in pairs. This is confirmed this time too – said astronomer Jerzy Rafalski from the Planetarium Space Popularization Center in Toruń.

Recently – on October 14 – an annular solar eclipse could be observed in North and South America. Now astronomy enthusiasts are waiting for a lunar eclipse.

– This (eclipses coming in pairs – editor’s note) results from the fact that the Moon needs about a month to completely circle the Earth. When we had a solar eclipse, the Moon was between the Earth and the Sun. After almost two weeks, it will cover half of the orbit and will be on the opposite side of the Earth, and the Earth, illuminated by the Sun, will cast a shadow on its natural satellite – said the expert.

One eighth of the shield

– The lower, left part of the Moon’s disk will be slightly darker, as if “eaten”, even though the Moon will be full. The Earth’s shadow will basically skim the surface of the Moon, because only about one-eighth of the disk will be covered, the astronomer described.

It is worth paying attention to the shape of the Earth’s shadow that will cover the Moon. – If you look closely, you can see that it is part of a circle. A long time ago, the first sky observers understood in this way, among other things, that the Earth is a ball – noted Rafalski.
