From September 30, 2021, the National Commission for Public Debate is organizing a 4-month consultation on the marine wind farm project near the island of Oléron (17). The LPO denounces a disastrous establishment for biodiversity.
If this project were to see the light of day, dozens of 250-meter-high wind turbines will be erected off the Charente-Maritime, in the Natura 2000 zone and within the perimeter of the Estuary Marine Park of the Gironde and the Mer des Mer. Pertuis. Located at the heart of one of the most important migratory routes in the world, this wind farm threatens tens of thousands of sea and coastal birds already exhausted by their journey.
The LPO supports the ecological transition and the development of renewable energies, but remains opposed to the installation of wind turbines in Natura 2000 zones and those which present a great wealth of biodiversity. The Charente coast is undeniably part of it, as evidenced by the high concentration of national nature reserves that have been created between the Vendée and the Gironde, including those of Moëze-Oléron, Marais d’Yves, Lilleau des Niges, Saint-Denys du Payré, Baie de l’Aiguillon, Marais de la Vacherie, Casse de la Belle Henriette, Marais de Mullembourg managed by the LPO.
The mapping of a wind turbine macro-zone over several thousand km2 and its land connections confirmed by the Regional Prefect, the Maritime Prefect and RTE reveal the gigantic project for a future cluster of industrial marine wind farms. It would be the largest European area devoted to offshore wind power: unimaginable and incompatible in these places recognized by France and Europe for their great ecological value!
For Dominique Chevillon, Vice-President of the LPO: “ It is the worst place on the Atlantic side to set up a wind farm. The state must absolutely review its copy. The energy transition cannot be done on the back of biodiversity ».
