The French little protected against death
A study conducted by Yougov France for Life5 reveals that only 34% of French people questioned are protected by death insurance. Of this percentage, 24% have taken out individual insurance and 10% are covered by their employer, in accordance with the National Collective Agreement for Executives. The study thus shows that the majority of French people are not protected against the risk of death.
Financial motivations for taking out life insurance
The main motivation, according to 61% of French respondents, for taking out death insurance is to finance funeral expenses. 43% of respondents are also interested in death insurance so that their loved ones can benefit from financial assistance at the time of death, and more than 55% estimate that the cost of a death is between €3,000 and €6,000. For 25% of respondents aged 25-34, subscribing to death insurance allows them to benefit from more advantageous taxation, the death capital being exempt from inheritance and income tax. 40% of respondents aged 35-44 and 41% of respondents with children see death insurance as a means of guaranteeing a financial future for their loved ones, in particular for financing studies or a real estate project.
This study highlights a low level of protection of the French against the risk of death, with only 34% of them covered by death insurance. Financial motivations, such as financing funeral expenses or guaranteeing financial assistance to loved ones, are the main reasons for taking out this insurance. Tax exemption and ensuring a financial future for loved ones are also important factors, depending on the age group.
