“The Loud and Surprising Sound of the Sun: Exploring the Noise at the Center of the Solar System”

KOMPAS.com – As a star with tremendous power, the Sun appears very quiet from Earth. But the hot ball that we thought was silent turned out to be loud.

The only reason we can’t hear the Sun is because sound doesn’t travel through a vacuum. If it could, the noise at the center of the Solar System would be very disturbing.

Quoted from IFL Science, Tuesday (30/5/2023) The sun is basically a giant nuclear fusion reaction pumping out so much energy, that it heats and illuminates the entire Earth and Solar System.

Along with an incredible amount of heat and light, the Sun also emits a significant amount of sound.

However, we on Earth cannot hear the Sun’s sound, because sound cannot travel through a vacuum that does not contain particles to carry vibrations.

Craig DeForest, a distinguished heliophysicist with the Southwest Research Institute’s Department of Space Studies, answered questions about how loud the Sun’s sound is, and if that sound, could hypothetically travel through space as it does through Earth’s atmosphere.

After some calculations, he explained that the Sun would theoretically emit about 100 decibels of sound.

The power of the sound the Sun might emit is estimated to be nearly as loud as standing next to a speaker at a rock concert or a crowded nightclub.

The sun is the center for the Solar System. The benefits of the Sun for life on Earth are numerous.

“The sun makes a very loud noise. Good thing the sound doesn’t travel through space,” said DeForest.

Knowing the sound of the Sun

He added that currently scientists can have a picture of the sound of the Sun thanks to various scientific instruments, such as the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI), a device installed on the SOHO spacecraft.

This spacecraft orbits the Sun 1.6 million kilometers from Earth.

Furthermore, the Sun’s sound waves are so deep, that they are usually at a frequency too low to be picked up by the human ear.

The following are NASA’s published Sun sounds, recorded by the MDI instrument onboard the SOHO spacecraft.

It may also not be a single note, but a very complex, bell-like pattern of acoustic waves.

To make the Sun’s sound audible to human ears, scientists would have to speed it up tens of thousands of times, condensing weeks of vibrations into a few seconds.

Because what humans can finally hear is very subtle, even if a little creepy.

“The sound (of the Sun) without a filter is actually much more cacophonous and sounds less like a resonance to the ear than noise,” DeForest explained.
