“The history of independent journalism is over, it’s over,” Muratov declared at the start of the first Hamburg Press Freedom Conference on Monday.
According to him, the West is partly responsible for the situation of press freedom in Russia. As Muratov pointed out in an interview with the German broadcaster NDR, Russia has been asking the European Union and the West for many years: “Do you need gas in Germany, or do you need press freedom in Russia instead?” For 20 years, the answer was gas, said Muratov.
“Europe’s leading politicians were Putin’s associates,” Muratov declared. He specifically mentioned former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, as well as high-ranking politicians from Austria, Finland and France.
Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 “for his efforts to ensure freedom of speech, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace.”
Muratov is one of the founders of the Russian independent newspaper “Novaya gazeta”, established in 1993.
The Russian Ministry of Justice this month declared Muratov a “foreign agent”.
