We came across a very interesting Reddit post and, even if it looks like a vulgar copy/paste, we found it relevant to share it with you. This is an illustrated Los Angeles Lakers system with its derivatives, all put together by the Californians during garbage time against the Houston Rockets.
Shanmustafa (big up to him) details the scheme. So it starts with Austin Reaves ball in hand. Two Lakers players are in the corners, a winger at 45 opposite the action and LeBron James at the head of the racquet, eccentric in an elbow. The very first option is to serve the King and then cut to the circle and play the pass-and-go.
If the pass is not possible, Reaves goes up to 45 on the opposite side to put a screen on the winger, who cuts immediately. Well, the Rockets defense is absolutely abysmal.
Third and last option, Austin Reaves recovers the ball from the hands of LeBron James after his cut and screen. He then plays a quick pick-and-roll with the four-time MVP, who rolls towards the circle.
In these situations, the two shooters in the corners also represent options for open shots behind the arc. James was already playing in those setups with the Cleveland Cavaliers. It is in this position that the expression “point forward” takes on its full meaning since his passing quality allows him to find the right teammate at the right time. Hence the interest also to surround him with reliable shooters.
This system is one among many others but it can do damage in the playoffs, when half-court basketball takes on more importance during more choppy and more strategic matches at times.
