Hard to just walk away from lord of the rings. Especially when you’re Warner Bros. Discovery, you hold part of the rights and face tens of billions of dollars in debt. The head of the company, David Zaslav, therefore, together with the not very good financial results, announced that they are working on new titles from the vast fantasy world of JRR Tolkien. Warner managed to enter into cooperation with the video game and media company Embracer Group, which bought the rights to part of the author’s work last year and even then admitted the possibility of creating new series or films.
Zaslav has now confirmed that the management of the studio Warner Bros. signed a contract for several films from the Tolkien universe. It is not yet clear which part of the extensive history of Middle-earth and the surrounding area they should cover. The heads of Warners, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, described the pair of Peter Jackson trilogies as ground-breaking. “But for all the detail that the filmmakers have lovingly included in these films, Tolkien’s vast world on screen remains largely unexplored,” added.

The head of the Freemode group under the Embracer Group, which holds the rights to Tolkien’s work, also assured that they are fully aware of its cultural value and will treat it with respect. Exactly what that means remains to be seen. Warner Bros. is to work with New Line Cinema, the studio behind both of Jackson’s trilogies, on upcoming projects. On to the news she expressed also their main creative trio – director Peter Jackson and screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Embracer and Warners are said to be in communication with them and plan to at least discuss future plans with them.
