The Looming Military Intervention and Reasons for ECOWAS Action in Niger

With the end of the ECOWAS deadline for the coup leaders in Niger, the specter of military intervention looms, which would have major repercussions, if it took place, and experts believe that despite this, there are many reasons for intervention.

Last Sunday, the deadline granted by ECOWAS to the coup leaders in Niger expired, and the deadline came after a delegation visited Niamey in an attempt to get out of the crisis, but it did not reach any results.

It is scheduled to meet the leaders of the group at a summit next Thursday in the Nigerian capital, “Abuja” to discuss their options regarding the coup.

An expert believes that there are reasons for ECOWAS, and behind it France, to intervene militarily in Niger, despite the military challenges that stand in the way.

The head of the Maghreb Center for Strategic Studies, Dr. Didi Ould Salek, says to the program “newsroomOn “Sky News Arabia”:

The ECOWAS group faces real challenges for many considerations. There are internal disputes among the 15 countries of the group, and some countries within the group oppose military intervention. Nigeria is the largest country in the group and the most capable of it militarily, and it is likely to intervene, and its president has an opposing position on coups, and the coup in Niger, the neighboring country to his country, is a great challenge. Leaving the coup in Niger alone will make the countries of the region fall like dominoes one after the other, because we witnessed a coup in Mali, then Burkina Faso, and to some extent in Chad, then Niger.
