The Longevity of Battery in Volkswagen ID.3 Electric Vehicle: ADAC Test Results and Recommendations

One of the main concerns consumers have regarding electric vehicles is the longevity of the batteries that power them. The German automobile association ADAC tried to check how true this was by using the Volkswagen ID.3 as a test.

After 100,000 km of tests, the ID.3 boasts 93% of its battery capacity. The organization said this was within the range of expected losses after that distance, despite the fact that not all of VW’s charging recommendations were met.

The car has been charged multiple times on fast chargers – something most consumers who can charge at home probably won’t do that often. In ADAC tests, the battery was also often charged to 100% and then left on the charger for days for the next drive, which the automaker also does not recommend.

The ID.3’s battery is a full-sized 82 kWh, but using all of its power significantly affects the pack’s longevity. Car manufacturers combat this by building a buffer into their batteries that prevents drivers from using a certain portion of their capacity. However, not all brands advertise this difference, which can lead to some customer frustration. However, Volkswagen is adamant that the ID.3 has a net capacity of 77 kWh.

While reviews of the ID.3 have been positive, ADAC has some suggestions for buyers. Mainly, from there they recommend that they stay up to date with the updates that the company distributes. The organization said VW’s improvements increased charging power, made the powertrain more efficient and extended the ID.3’s range during the colder seasons while the car was in its possession. ADAC is not done with ID.3. The organization plans to continue testing the car until it reaches 160,000 km, when the warranty expires.
