The Longest Sneezing Fit in History: Donna Griffiths’ Unbelievable 976-Day Sneezing Odyssey

Unbelievable, but true! Donna Griffiths (54), a writer from Hereford and Worcester, UK, sneezed uncontrollably for 976 days. The crisis began on July 26, 1981, and only after millions of sneezes did it end on September 16, 1983, according to The Book of Records.

Sneezing is caused by irritation of the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, and although it is quite annoying, it is rarely a sign of a serious medical problem. When the membranes are irritated by pollen or dust, the muscles of the chest, diaphragm, abdomen and vocal cords team up with the muscles at the back of the throat to get rid of that irritation.

He sneezed over 1 million times in the first 365 days

And while everyone sneezes differently — some people louder and more often than others — no one in history has sneezed as long as Donna, who described the bizarre episode in the second chapter of her book, They Said I Was Mad.

During those two years of torment, Griffiths sneezed at least once a minute, but as time went on, it reduced to once every 5 minutes. The only relief he had was deep sleep. But once he woke up, the sneezing would return. It was estimated that he sneezed about 1,408,320 times in the first 365 days.

You can find plenty of tips and tricks on the internet to prevent sneezing, with suggestions ranging from pinching your nose and tickling the roof of your mouth with your tongue, to more atypical tips such as distracting your body by saying the word “pickles”. Anyway, whenever you sneeze, hopefully it won’t last as long as Donna’s episode.

According to researchers, it’s not just dust and pollen that can cause sneezing. Bright light, including sunlight, can trigger a sneezing fit. German researchers at Saarland University Medical Center found that most of the more than 1,000 patients they surveyed experienced such sneezing. Experts suspect it’s genetic.
