It is a magic potion that they pass on to each other from the Vikings. Norwegians eat their ration of cod liver oil at any age. Vitamin D is indeed an essential. And to have the necessary amount of nutrients, you should eat 200 grams of salmon, 40 sardines or 100 grams of mackerel every day. In France, we are far from the mark.
Yet vitamin D is almost a century old. It was discovered in 1922 by Elmer McCollum. In 1912 he had given cod liver oil to rats to fight eye disease. He had thus demonstrated the existence of a new substance: vitamin A. 10 years later, McCollum observed that cod liver oil also protects against rickets: it is the work of vitamin D.
In 1928, Adolf Windaus received the Nobel Prize for chemistry by demonstrating that exposure to the sun of rats allows the manufacture of vitamin D.
