The serial murders on Long Island, New York have been a mystery for 13 years, and are full of mysteries and strange coincidences.

The case exploded after 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert disappeared on May 1, 2010, after calling 911 and saying she was in danger.

She was at Oak Beach where she had a mission as an escort. She was only found dead in December 2011 further out on the beach area from which she disappeared.

In the search for Gilbert, however, other gruesome discoveries were made: Four women’s bodies were found in the course of two days in December 2010. All worked as prostitutes and all were wrapped in burlap sacks of the same type.

On Friday, the man who is now charged with three murders, the 59-year-old architect Rex Heuermann, was arrested in the middle of Manhattan and taken into custody. For decades he has lived in Massapequa Park, across the bay from where the women were found.

He had been under surveillance for several months, and was arrested after investigators made a DNA match to a hair found on one of the women, Megan Waterman. The investigators matched the 59-year-old’s DNA by extracting it from leftover pizza he had thrown away in a trash can in Manhattan.

Press from all over the United States have gathered outside the 59-year-old’s house in a quiet area on Long Island this weekend, and the search for people who can say something about the seemingly ordinary family man has begun.

The New York Post has spoken to a 25-year-old woman who was shocked when she saw photos of the arrested man.

She had to call the police after a very unpleasant encounter with Heuermann in a park close to where he lives.

– He came up behind me and asked what time it was, she says to the New York Post.

– He tried to give me compliments, and asked if I came here often and what my name was. He was wearing very dirty clothes, and just came jumping out of the forest. No matter where I was in the forest, he appeared, says the woman who was cycling in the park.

She was so put out that she had to call her sister to be picked up. She then reported the incident to the police, according to the report New York Post.

The stories of neighbors who tell of a “very quiet neighbour” have also come – as they often do in such cases. However, one of the neighbors has something else to say.

– On Halloween, the children are asked to stay away from his house. He is not very nice, says neighbor Barry Auslander Newsweek. He says he himself has never spoken to the 59-year-old, but says the house was dilapidated and the garden unkempt.

Heuermann has denied that he is behind it, according to his lawyer Michael Brown.

He is currently charged with having killed three women, but a total of eleven skeletons have been found in the same area.
