Gallipoli – Epidemic virus aside (or maybe not), this year will be remembered as the year of the degree course in Medicine in Lecce, or rather in Biomedical Engineering. The huge resources in circulation in public health in an anti-Covid function have probably contributed to overcoming the obstacle against which previous projects had hit, represented the high costs, in addition to the inevitable jealousies.
The determination of the rector Fabio Pollice, who took office for a couple of years, allowed the last step, to complete a long and demanding journey, to have a positive outcome. It happened last December 22 with the go-ahead from the Unisalento Board of Directors, which followed an identical opinion from the Academic Senate.

There was nothing taken for granted if you think that the previous attempt, born at the end of last year, ended with a big red disk. Nor was the much desired degree course at stake, but a memorandum of understanding between various subjects including the ASL Lecce, the principals of Gallipoli e Tricase, with the task of exploring a possible academic settlement of Medicine.
Before arriving at the historical date all the opinions of the Departments involved were collected; the quality Presidium; the Evaluation Unit of the University of Salento. Among the first to express themselves favorably are the members of the Curc, the Regional University Committee made up of all the rectors of the Universities of Puglia and very careful to evaluate any activation of duplicates of degree courses.
Broad convergence created
The integration between Engineering and Medicine was successful and innovative, born from a virtuous agreement with the Biomedical District of Salento, Nanotec of the National Research Council, the Biomolecular Center of the Italian Institute of Technologies and Medtronic, a multinational company that provides devices and services for a new Health.
The Board of the Engineering Department approved the course project on February 28th. The course includes six years of Medicine and a one-year specialization in Engineering, to keep the “new doctors” up to date with technological advances.
Graduates in step with technologies
“The Milan model spurs us on – told the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno the rector Pollice – Humanitas and Politecnico proceed together to go beyond the boundaries of medicine understood in the traditional sense ”. Now we await the definitive “yes” from Anvur, the national agency for the evaluation of the university and research system currently chaired by the former rector of the “Aldo Moro” of Bari, professor Uricchio.
If all goes as planned, the hypothesis of a close relationship with the “Sacred Heart” of Gallipoli, on which the attention had been concentrated with conferences and seminars and – more recently – a nursing course held at that hospital.
