The “LNSO Summer” festival has organized an ambitious symphonic-ethno-jazz program for the decade

The Latgale United Choir under the direction of Andas Lipskas and Jānis Veličko is holding one of the last rehearsals in preparation for the performance of Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony at the Latgale Embassy “Gors”. This will be one of the five musical events of the “Summer Camp” of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), which is taking place these days in Rēzekne.

Around 70 singers from the Rēzekne “Medicus” choir and the Rēzekne “Ezerzeme” regional choir, as well as the children’s choir of the Rēzekne primary school and the Latgale Music and Art High School, have joined the festival choir, which will be the same stage with the symphony orchestra for the first time, said Jānis Veličko, the leader of the children’s choir.

“It was a challenge in a way. There was never a moment when I didn’t like the music. They learn the German text that is aimed at us with interest. Constantly and with pleasure. Like it’s theirs.”

It was also a challenge for the adult choir, conductor Anda Lipska said:

“It’s a completely different voice, a different way of working, a different way of thinking, a different responsibility. It’s a good challenge for us. I think it’s going to be a big show there, a great musical celebration, we look forward to it with great pleasure.”

“LNSO Vasarnīca” is held for the 10th year. The first “Vasarnīca” was held in Cēsis, after which the idea arose to visit other regional concert halls as well. As LNSO director Indra Lukina said,

unlike the winter season, when more classical values are adhered to, the summer festival features works from a wide range of genres:

“We’ve even organized a mono opera, we’ve organized a contemporary dance show, we’ve also organized a ballet show, we’ve organized musicals, we’ve arrange chamber music. In short, our idea is that we leave for 2-3 days and then try to show the audience from different aspects of how a symphony orchestra works, because today a symphony orchestra does not mean but classical concerts.

This is already the fifth “Vasarnīca” in “Gor”. The director of the LNSO explained the regular return directly to the Latgale concert hall:

“We immediately fell in love with this concert hall for two reasons. First of all, because there are wonderful people who work in Gora and who welcomed us. We developed a bond and a good relationship from the first time. Secondly, because this is an excellent concert hall to the sound of a large symphony orchestra.”

Diana Zirniņa, the head of the Latgale embassy “Gors”, is also happy with the successful cooperation and the opportunity of the concert hall to be a platform for new cooperations about Latgale and with musicians Latvian:

“It is a great gift for us that the National Symphony Orchestra is going to Latgali for a multi-day event.

I would say that this is not only a musical event, but also an event through which the story of Latgale is told in some way.

It’s a great way to not only have LSNO come – here we are, but also bring in local forces.”

A successful collaboration with local musicians was also established in “Vasarnākis” before.

This year, in honor of the tenth anniversary of the festival, an ambitious symphonic-ethno-jazz program was created.

LNSO director general Andris Poga said:

“In collaboration with the orchestra, in collaboration with the trio “Elpo” and in collaboration with ethnomusicology singers from the Rēzekne Music High School, a very interesting cross-genre project was created, where is both symphonic music and the music of the Latvian composer Jānis. Ivanovs in a new arrangement, as well as new works created especially for this evening, will be performed.”
