What everyone always wants to know is now revealed by the Spanish sports newspaper “Marca”.
The daily newspaper with the highest circulation in Spain publishes the list of footballers in Europe’s top five leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France) who rake in the most money each year.
Unsurprisingly, the Paris Saint Germain superstars are raking in the cash. Brazilian Neymar earns almost 50 million euros a year.
That puts the 30-year-old forward ahead of his 34-year-old club-mate Lionel Messi. The Argentine is paid a good 40 million a year.
The biggest surprise is number three on the list of merits. 32-year-old Gareth Bale gets 34 million a year from Real Madrid.
The Welshman has only played four games in Spain’s La Liga this season, otherwise he was not in the squad, was on the bench or was injured. Most recently, he caused frustration among Austria’s football fans after tearing the ÖFB team from all World Cup dreams with two goals for Wales.
Alaba and Arnautovic not in the top 20
An Austrian is not in the list of top earners. Neither David Alaba (Real Madrid) nor Marko Arnautovic (Bologna) make it into the top 20 list.
Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) is fourth with €31.5m ahead of Belgium’s Eden Hazard (Real Madrid) with €30m.
With Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, the world footballer of the year and best-earning player in the German Bundesliga is only in 10th place.
It is also surprising that no player from the Italian Serie A makes it into the top 20.
