The Czech football players under the age of 21 in the penultimate match of the European Championship qualification won 1: 0 in Marijampole over Lithuania and kept the first place in the table of the fourth group. The selection of coach Karel Krejčí leads by a point ahead of Scotland, which, however, has played one less match.
Although the Czech team had to do without the best scorer and key midfielder Ladislav Krejčí, he had the match under control from the beginning. Unlike the previous duel in Scotland, where, despite his predominance, he lost 0: 2 and suffered his first defeat in qualifying, this time he managed to prevail.
“We scored the first goal and, with two exceptions, when we let our opponents return to the standards, we checked the opening half. coach Tailor in a media recording.
“After the second half, I take it as a lucky victory, but we needed three points and I’m glad we have something to play for in a month,” he said. “I dedicate the win to my mother, who is after a serious operation. She is our big fan and I believe that the win will make her happy and encourage her in a very important fight,” he added.
Sadílek was the first to threaten in the 20th minute, whose center caused Krapikas great problems. Two minutes later, the guests were leading. Bucha relaxed on the left side, centered, and the unattended Šašinka sent the Czech team into the lead. Lithuania threatened in the 33rd minute, but with a Širvys shot around the wall from a direct kick, the goalkeeper Jedlička managed.
After a break from a similar position, Janošek fired a direct kick and just missed. After an hour of play, the Lithuanians, who came to life in the second half, were able to equalize. The Czech players fell in the opponent’s half and Jankauskas went to Jedlička alone. However, the home striker did not fit the shot and did not hit the goal.
After 73 minutes Šašinka could have reduced the lead with a blistering strike from the left wing, had it not been for an excellent block by the visitors’ keeper. Five minutes before the end, the Lithuanians were again close to equalizing, but Petkevičius headed right next to it. The home team did not take an even bigger chance in the setting, when Jedlička fired Petkevičius’ shot up close.
“Today we have to thank Jedl in the gate as well. In the end he held us a lot and actually saved the victory,” said Šašinka. “He showed that he is a key player for us and showed it at a time when we really needed it,” said the Ostrava striker.
Thanks to the victory, the 21 team maintained the first place in the table with the gain of 18 points, which guarantees a direct advance to the championship, where the five best teams from the second places will also pass. The second is Scotland with 17 points and the third Croatia has 16 points, but both teams have played one less match.
The selection of coach Krejčí will end the qualification in November in Greece, where he needs to win. He is played by lot of opponents, because the Scots will first play against Croatia in a month and then present themselves in Greece. “Progressive chances are still alive and we can play it ourselves in Greece,” said Michal Sadílek.
