“The lion was tranquilized and captured.” It is 10pm and 11pm when the mayor of Ladispoli Alessandro Grando on Facebook puts an end to the emergency that began shortly after 3pm when the animal escaped from the circus in Via del Mediterraneo. It was the mayor himself who raised the alarm at 4.35pm, making official the rumors that had been circulating on social media for over an hour.
An alarm, that of the mayor, followed the intervention of the police, immediately on the trail of the animal, tracked down and isolated inside the reeds near the Sanguinara watercourse. A sort of siege began at 4.30pm, with a cage and the owner of the circus on site. The animal, kept under control, however did not want to know about being captured. The moments of greatest fear are between 6.30pm and 7pm, with the lion emerging from the reeds and taking a walk along via Warsaw, via Mosca and via Budapest. All filmed by citizens. [qui il video]
Scared, scared and chased by police and cell phones, the king of the jungle who became emperor of Ladispoli has returned to the reeds. In the meantime, specialized operators have arrived on site, equipped with anaesthetic. The objective is to sedate the lion and then capture it. Around 9pm the sedative was fired. Forty minutes later, as expected, the animal fell asleep and was then taken into care by the circus staff, but not before being dragged by volunteers and citizens to the foot of the pick-up which then took the animal back to the tent.
“I thank the state police, the carabinieri, the fire brigade, the local and provincial police, the local health authority and all the volunteers who served in these hours of great apprehension”, added Mayor Grando who then closed the controversy began in the first post: “I hope that this episode can stir some consciences, and that we can finally put an end to the exploitation of animals in circuses”.
In the afternoon, in fact, Grando wanted to clarify that he had not authorized the circus with animals. “Why did the mayor authorize the circus? The answer is that I have not authorized anything, it is not up to me to do so, and that unfortunately we cannot ban circuses with animals from coming to our city. In 2017 we tried but we lost the appeal to the TAR and we also had to reimburse the legal costs to the appellants. Until the rules change we will not be able to do otherwise”.
