The basketball unions that went to the polls this morning to elect the next administration, second from the day of the demobilization of the “dinosaur” Giorgos Vasilakopoulos, have to choose between the dystopia of a new three-year Liolios and a strange alliance of concordant “eternal enemies’ from different political and sports factions. The three nominations that complete the rather salt-and-pepper scene add rather than real intrigue. The process will be done electronically this time, even though the pandemic is in the distant past.
Vangelis Liolios is considered a favorite for re-election, since his administration acquires establishment characteristics and controls the area, with the blessing of course of Olympiakos and – shadowy – of the government. In September 2021, the one-time owner of Prometheus received 55.3% of the vote and was elected in a landslide, with 335 votes. The once strong administration that was ostracized in 2021 with the -almost photographic and marginally constitutional- law of Avgenakis is represented by the candidacy of the former general secretary Takis Tsagronis, while as “independents” the agent Tasos Delimbaltadakis and Bane Prelevics, unsuccessful in the respective elections of ESAKE .
Vangelis Liolios has systematically avoided statements and interviews lately. The 57-year-old Achaios, a pediatric pulmonologist but also the owner of a chain of cafes, the administrative leader of Prometheus Patras since 2004, talks informally about a “recognizable first three years” and promises a richer work for his next term. He considers the rich sponsor agreement with OPAP (with all that the embrace of gambling implies) as the crowning glory of his deeds, as well as the united image of the National team, despite the toxicity and chronic problems in the relations of the EEC with the Milwaukee Bucks.
