A clear link between cognitive health and vision… a result of a new American research published by JAMA Journal of Medicine.
The research, which was supervised by a team of doctors at the University of Michigan, shows that cognitive decline may also be associated with a new risk factor related to eye health, such as visual impairments, poor vision, and untreated eye-related problems.
Scientifically, dementia is an umbrella term for devastating neurodegenerative conditions, and it has long been seen as an inevitable part of aging, but recent research focuses on the importance of preventing it, by identifying risk factors, and treating them or controlling their course and severity.
According to the researchers, visual impairment may be one of those factors that can be modified and treated to avoid any deterioration in cognitive and mental health.
Global statistics indicate that one out of three people will develop dementia in their lifetime, which may exacerbate the global burden of the disease.
On the other hand, the research team also found that hearing aids can be an effective way to reduce forgetfulness or cognitive impairment, which accompanies as a person gets older.
The researchers believe that hearing, like sight, is one of the senses whose weakness leads to confusion, so preventive measures are very necessary, and caring for the senses may be an easy way to protect a person’s cognitive perception.
Scientists are investigating the relationship between visual acuity and mental health
Commenting on the subject, Professor Moez Bakhit, a consultant on the brain, nervous system and immunity, said during his interview with the morning program on “Sky News Arabia”:
• Acknowledgment, according to the study, of a link between visual impairment and dementia.
• The absence of an explanation of who is the first cause of the deterioration of mental health.
• From a scientific point of view, it can be said that visual impairment can be a cause of dementia.
• Visual problems accelerate the weakness of brain cells responsible for perception and memory.
The study focused on visual impairment and its relationship to cognitive decline, but what about the blind? Are learning strategies for the blind beneficial to them and their mental health when they grow up.. Are they sufficient?
• When a person loses his sight from birth or from childhood, his other senses grow and strengthen to establish balance and equation for the deficiency.
• It is not possible to assert or say that people who have been blind since birth have problems with their mental health, which causes dementia or memory loss.
• Learning and strengthening memory for the blind is important to avoid early dementia and memory loss.

Preventive measures against dementia caused by visual problems
• Vision has a major role in changes in the body, according to studies conducted on the subject.
• The need for prevention and periodic follow-up of vision, especially in the elderly, to avoid other health problems.
• Not exercising memory is one of the causes of dementia.
• Young people today suffer from the issue of forgetfulness and the fear of developing Alzheimer’s disease early, due to the lack of training and strengthening of memory and the reliance on electronic memory in the conduct of their affairs.
• Modern electronic applications, although useful, affect thinking and limit the functions of the mind and memory.
• The need to exercise memory and not rely entirely on modern technologies.
