An increased consumption of ultra-processed foods increases the risk of developing high blood pressure, according to a study carried out in Israel, announced the University of Haifa (UH).
The study also found that ultra-processed foods increase the risk of excess fat in the blood (hyperlipidemia), UH said on Sunday.
Moreover, these foods increase the risk of inflammation among people suffering from fatty liver disease, especially among smokers, the Israeli university added.
Ultra-processed foods are usually sold in sealed packages and contain additives to enhance the taste of the products or to extend their shelf life.
In a study whose findings were published in the scientific journal Liver International, a team of researchers from UH, Tel Aviv University Medical Center and the University of Washington in Seattle found that an increased intake of ultra-processed foods it increases approximately 1.5 times the risk of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and low level of “good” cholesterol (HDL).
At the same time, it doubles the possibility of suffering from metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of diabetes, stroke and heart and vascular diseases, according to the study.
“The findings reinforce the importance of consuming unprocessed foods, along with reducing the intake of packaged, ready-to-eat foods and beverages,” the researchers concluded.
