The Link Between Smoking and Inflammatory Processes in the Brain

Scientists suggest that smoking can contribute to inflammatory processes in the human brain.

Scientists at Aarhus University have found that smokers are more prone to mental illness, including depression and bipolar disorder. To confirm their hypothesis, the experts conducted a study in which about 350 thousand people took part.

Scientists analyzed the data of patients, on the basis of which they came to the conclusion that most of the smoking respondents, when they reach the age of 30 to 60, end up in a hospital with mental disorders. At the same time, many of the patients acquired a bad habit at a very young age, before reaching adulthood.

The researchers were also able to identify a pattern between the causes of smoking cravings and a certain set of genes that increase the likelihood that a person will be addicted to smoking. According to scientists, these same genes can influence the acquisition of psychological diseases by a person in the future.

– Another explanation for this pattern could be that smoking causes inflammation in the brain, which in the long run can damage it and lead to various mental disorders. But we cannot yet establish the exact reasons, the researchers concluded.
