Sedentary people have a 60% higher risk of developing dementia. Researchers recommend standing work to avoid dementia.

The risk of death drops by 40% in people who exercise.

Previous research shows that people who sit all day in the office and at home in front of televisions and computers are more likely to develop heart disease, obesity, diabetes.

American researchers studied nearly 50 thousand men and women over 60 and found that people who sit for more than 12 hours have a 60% higher risk of developing dementia. Although exercise is recommended – the best solution is to stand when you work or relax.

The risk of death from cardiovascular disease or stroke decreases by almost 40% in people who do physical activities at least 5-minutes a day.

“Our body is not built to sit down. Our backs, our legs are made just to move, but the idea is that if you sit down for a period of an hour, an hour and a half, then ten minutes just to walk, to get your blood moving, does wonders for time. This discipline will be seen in 20-30 years, in fact, at an older age”, says Radu Delicote, political analyst.

The negative effects of prolonged sitting can be so strong, the researchers found, that even people who exercise regularly face greater risks if they sit for much of the day.

How you can combat the high risk of dementia

The researchers saw little improvement among people who broke up their sitting time with breaks. The study involved 49,841 men and women aged 60 or older.

Previous research shows that people who sit all day in the office and at home in front of televisions and computers are more likely to develop heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other diseases and die prematurely compared to people who get up often and moves.

“One study says this: you get up and leave the screen, because these are blue light screens, and you look out the window at either the sky, the natural blue color, or the green color, to relax your eyes and defocus sight. Ten minutes of defocusing, you stare blankly in Romanian, taking some steps. That simple, every hour and a half, for 10 minutes. It seems very little, but in fact it is difficult because you need discipline to do this”, says Radu Delicote.

The best way to reduce your risk of dementia is to find ways to sit down less in general. If your job requires a lot of time at the desk and at the computer, look for opportunities during the day to be on the move. Walk around the office while talking on the phone. Schedule walking appointments. Pick up your lunch instead of having it delivered.
