In the results of the study, which were published on the “Science Alert” website, exposure to pesticides has been linked to lower sperm concentration in adult men over half a century, and this review is considered one of the most comprehensive reviews to date, according to the research team.

The researchers explained that their findings can be generalized, pointing out the importance of understanding the effect of pesticides on sperm concentration in humans, as they are exposed to them through consuming contaminated food and water.

Data presented in the study showed that men’s exposure to organophosphate, a type of pesticide, was associated with lower sperm concentrations.

The researchers analyzed data from 1,774 adult men in multiple regions and confirmed a consistent association between increased pesticide exposure and lower sperm concentration.

The study recommended reducing exposure to the types of pesticides studied to preserve fertility.

A 2022 review found that the average sperm count among participants (who were not infertile) fell by 51% between 1973 and 2018, from 101.2 million to 49 million per milliliter of semen, and this is still within the “normal” range for the organization. Global Health, according to the study.

Although low sperm concentration remains within the normal range, researchers point out the importance of taking regulatory measures to reduce exposure to pesticides to maintain reproductive health.
