In 99% of cases, the development of cervical cancer is associated with infection with oncogenic types of human papillomavirus (HPV). About this on the radio “Komsomolskaya Pravda – Kaliningrad“said oncogynecologist Igor Boldov.
According to the specialist, cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors both in Russia and in the world. In terms of mortality among women, it is in second place, behind only breast cancer. At the same time, the problem is “getting younger” – more and more often the diagnosis is given to girls under 30 years of age.
“The increase in incidence in Russia and in the world may be due to the fact that the sexual revolution is still underway: early onset of sexual activity, a large number of sexual partners. All this leads to almost 100% infection with the human papillomavirus and a further sad outcome,” said the doctor.
Boltov claims that 99% of cases of cervical cancer are associated with infection with oncogenic strains, of which only two are the most dangerous. However, infection with even oncogenic types of HPV does not always lead to cervical cancer. There are proven cases where the virus was defeated by a woman’s healthy immune system. Those women who are carriers of HIV are at greater risk. For them it is five to six times higher. “Therefore, the immune system plays an important role here,” the doctor adds.
Another unobvious risk factor is partners who have not been circumcised. The gynecological oncologist claims that in a population where the majority of the male population is circumcised, the incidence of cervical cancer in women is lower. This is associated with the oncogenic influence of the secretion that accumulates on the male penis behind the foreskin, the so-called smegma.
