The Link Between Gum Disease and Diabetes: A Medical Study Reveals Early Signs in Gums

Al-Marsad newspaper: A medical study revealed signs appearing in the gums that indicate that you have diabetes.

For his part, American physician Ronald Tamler, director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes Clinical Institute in New York, said: “Gingivitis is an early sign of type 2 diabetes, according to the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care.”

The study pointed out that people who suffer from gum disease have an increased risk of developing diabetes, explaining: “The relationship between gum disease and diabetes goes in both directions, and the presence of either condition increases the risk of developing the other.”

He continued: “The inflammation resulting from gum disease is due to the same factors responsible for high blood sugar levels that cause diabetes.”

It is noteworthy that high blood sugar levels lead to damage to nerves, blood vessels, and kidneys. This reduces the supply of oxygen and food to the gums, which increases the incidence of gum and bone infections.
