Apart from physical disabilities, diabetes can also trigger visual disabilities. If amputation is caused by complications of large blood vessels, then visual disability is triggered by complications of small blood vessels (microangiopathy).
Small vessel complications can involve the eyes, kidneys, and peripheral nerves in the legs.
“In the eyes it can cause problems with the retina, in the kidneys it can cause kidney problems, and in the feet, the peripheral nerves sometimes cause tingling in diabetes patients and so on,” explained Ikhsan.
Ikhsan further explained that the retina is the back of the eye which functions as a capturing screen.
“If the eye sees something, it will be captured by the back of the eye called the retina. Well, there are indeed a lot of blood vessels in the retina. “In people with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy occurs, there are changes in the blood vessels in the eyes, ranging from mild to severe.”
If these blood vessel changes reach where the image falls on the retina, vision loss can occur.
