The Lingering Influence of Donald Trump on the Republicans’ Presidential Campaigns

There’s bound to be a lot more happening in the coming months. And the distrust of the Americans towards this new duel of veterans still makes the race very uncertain. However, one thing is clear: the electoral campaign is stuck in the past.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats have succeeded in passing the torch to subsequent generations. This step backwards is also due to Donald Trump’s campaign, all about his ego and obsessed with revenge fraught with threats to American democracy. He spends his speeches defending the results of a presidency which ended three years ago, in another world. He justifies himself for not having built his famous wall on the Mexican border. Yes, he assures that the United States would be much better off if he were still in the White House, a statement that is necessarily unverifiable.

This unpleasant impression of déjà vu is reinforced by the fact that Donald Trump continues to contest the results of the 2020 elections. The attack on American democracy at the end of his mandate will engulf the campaign when the former president is on trial in next March to respond to the assault on the Capitol.

The worst is that this outdated speech has contaminated the Republican candidates. Concerning one of the biggest issues of the century, the climate crisis, they deny it and unanimously propose to drill more, denouncing the energy transition, although it also bears economic promises. While the race is locked on the Democratic side, Republican candidates are desperately struggling to articulate a vision. Where have America’s optimism and stubborn faith in the future gone?
