‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ has triumphed in recent weeks on Netflix, and those who have been left wanting more can go through Amazon Prime Video to see its film version, entitled ‘The Innocent’. This is another adaptation of the novels by Michael Connelly, who created the character of defense attorney Mickey Haller, and this time it is Matthew McConaughey himself who brings him to life.
Directed by Brad Furman and released in 2011, the film follows Mickey Haller on a case that turns his career upside down. Haller usually defends low-class criminals mostly from the popular classes, but with the young Louis Roulet, a wealthy heir to Beverly Hills, you will have the highest fees of your career. Also the greater media pressure and moral and conscience conflicts. Roulet has been accused of murdering a prostitute, and although at first it seems simple, the story becomes more and more complicated, plunging Haller into a series of problems that he had not anticipated. However, he has plenty of talent as a defense attorney and charisma to get his way.
In addition to Matthew McConaughey, we find in the cast Ryan Phillippe as the client he has to defend, as well as Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, Josh Lucas, Bryan Cranston, Laurence Mason, Frances Fisher, John Leguizamo, Michael Peña and more. In his review of ‘The Innocent’ for FOTOGRAMAS, Jordi Costa wrote: “It’s one of those films that, while displaying the seductive power of a good plot (the plot, of irrefutable solidity, seems to be forged in iron), show that, often, what is usually understood as a good script has no other choice but to finish off in a recital of underlines, obviousness and crude attempts to make the plot fit. box (of the narrative)”.
With its lights and shadows, the film offers great entertainment for those addicted to lawyer stories and will quench a little the thirst that the first season of the Netflix series has left us. To all this, will there be a second season of ‘Lincoln’s lawyer’? We will have to wait to find out, but for now we can enjoy a little more of the character of Mickey Haller, in which the author Michael Connelly achieved the perfect mix of amoral scoundrel and everyday herowith a significant margin for redemption that will be achieved case by case, court by court, while balancing his personal life from the back of his Lincoln car.
