The Apple R1 chip in the Vision Pro glasses is lightning fast
It evaluates data from cameras and sensors at incredible speed
This will prevent the user from feeling nauseous
At the WWDC developer conference in June, Apple revealed the Vision Pro headset, albeit only at the prototype stage – the final product should arrive in the US at the beginning of next year, the rest of the world will see it a little later. We only know about the Vision Pro what Apple revealed in the presentation, a lot of things are still hidden from us – some secrets will begin to unravel in the coming months, but we will know the full secret only after the sales start.
What is the performance of the Apple R1 coprocessor?
The Vision Pro kit is powered by the Apple M2 chipset, which we know from, for example, the latest MacBook Air. This chip offers high performance and low consumption, but in the Vision Pro it is helped by one more helper – the Apple R1 coprocessor. While the Apple M2 processor takes care of the operation of the visionOS operating system, the Apple R1 chip is in charge of processing data from 12 cameras, 6 microphones and 5 sensors. The chip itself provides tracking of the user’s head, eyes and hands and 3D mapping of the surroundings.
The visionOS environment
The Apple R1 must handle all of these tasks with minimal latency so that there is no lag between the user’s movements and the displayed content that could cause nausea. The Korea Herald server claims that the main secret of the Apple R1 chip is the fast 1 gigabit DRAM memory from SK Hynix. This is to be designed with a special Fan-Out Wafer Level Packaging method that allows it to be connected to the R1 chipset as a single unit.
Thanks to this memory, the chip is supposed to handle the processing of all mentioned inputs within 12 milliseconds, which is eight times faster than the blink of an eye. The chip itself may not be the most powerful, the data processing speed is important here. SK Hynix did not confirm or deny the information about the collaboration on the Apple R1 chip, only saying that it cannot comment on its clients.
As the Vision Pro kit is interwoven with a lot of modern technology, it will not be the cheapest – Apple will offer it for $3,499, which is about 92,000 crowns including VAT.
