The Lifesaving Diet for Military Personnel: How a Mediterranean Diet Reduces PTSD Symptoms

Eating a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and fish, can reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress syndrome, making it the lifesaving diet of military personnel, a new study shows.

The study examined how trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms are associated with the gastrointestinal microbiome and dietary habits of 191 women who participated in a small women’s health study, the journal reports. Nature Mental Health.

Women who ate a Mediterranean diet experienced fewer PTSD symptoms, the journal reported. Plant foods were associated with reducing symptoms, while processed foods and red meat were blamed for triggering them.

Carol Shively, a professor at Wake Forest University of Medicine, told the NBC News that the study could show what foods PTSD patients should eat to reduce symptoms, especially in the military.

“Our findings suggest that the relationship between PTSD and the gut microbiome may inform recommendations to ameliorate the negative consequences of PTSD,” it shows in the study.

“It’s great that our results show that the Mediterranean diet can be beneficial for patients with PTSD symptoms,” said study author Dr. Yang-Yu Liu. “We are eager to discover more about the relationship between PTSD, diet and the microbiome. In a future study we will validate the effectiveness of probiotics as a method of preventing post-traumatic stress syndrome”, completed the specialist.
