Under the roof of the community “Užubalių gojis” in the village of Užubaliai, Alytus district, it is always full of people. Both older and younger residents of the three villages find activities in them. The village community, which has been operating for more than 20 years, has become a place for them to meet, celebrate, help each other, and socialize.
There are also active youth in the community
The village community “Užubalių goys” has 149 members – residents of the villages of Užubalių, Miklusėnai, Butrimiškii and Daugirdleių. A nice partnership has also been established with another community operating in Užubalaii, “24 Neighbors”.
Felomena Lazauskienė, the chairwoman of “Užubalių gojaus”, not only does not stay in one place, she is constantly looking for opportunities and funds for activities, but people do not sit idly by either. The community has implemented several projects, repaired premises, organizes holidays, goes on sightseeing trips around Lithuania.
The activity of young people is especially pleasing. In the community premises, they have a separate space where they can play table football, other games, read donated books or just communicate. The young members of the community hope that a volleyball tournament will take place this year, to which teams from Vilkaviškis, Marijampolė and other municipalities intend to come.
Everyone celebrates and organizes together
Community members celebrate various holidays together and organize leisure time. Women bake, weave ribbons, knit, make jewelry. Men play volleyball, participate in competitions, forge, saw, and do other work if necessary. This community probably can’t imagine their activities without traveling, participating in various events and they have a dream – that their assembled band will appear in the popular competition “Let’s give it steam”.
The people of “Užubalių gojaus” also help residents who are experiencing difficulties. One of them is a family from Ukraine who settled in the village last year.
The community wants it to be beautiful not only around the community house, but also in the village, so they organize clean-ups, tidy up the shores of the nearby Daugirdėlis lake, and the paths. “We all work voluntarily. What we can do, we do it ourselves”, says the chairperson of the community, F. Lazauskienė. She is happy with the help of Kęstutis Tumyns, the elder of the Alytus precinct, which she always receives when she needs to solve various economic matters.
Many activities under one roof
The community has installed several spaces in the premises provided by the municipality under the use contract. In one, people can chat over a cup of tea, in the other, various education and band rehearsals take place, handicraft exhibitions are presented, and on the second floor, young people are buzzing.
The branch of the district library operates right here, and the parking lot and gazebo next to the building is a place for summer events.
Free math lessons for community children
Community member Elvyra Jakučionytė is a math teacher who said goodbye to the school after 42 years of work, but not with the desire to help children understand a difficult subject. She organizes math classes in community facilities.
“I want to spend my time meaningfully and I like to teach children. The pace at school is much faster, and here we are not in a hurry, we find out what is not clear,” says the teacher who teaches mathematics to the community’s children free of charge. The children are happy with her lessons and the results – according to them, the grades have improved a lot, so they come to the lessons not because of their parents’ orders, but of their own free will. About 14 students come to the teacher E. Jakučionytė to learn additional mathematics.
The library is an attraction
Librarian Rima Abečiūnė says that the doors of the library, which has been operating in the community premises for several years, are opened every day by residents of Užubalai and the surrounding villages, and there are about 80 regular readers. “They read everything that is popular, we even create a queue of books for those who want to read,” says the librarian. Readers can leave this library not only with books, but also with board games donated by residents of the surrounding villages.
The youngest reader of the Užubalai library, who already has a reader’s certificate, is three years old, the oldest is over 70. The library is open on weekdays from 12:00 to 18:00, but the librarian R. Abečiūnė also brings books to the homes of the people of the village as a bookseller after work, and with the readers communicates a lot on the social network.
