Toto Cutugno, one of the greatest interpreters of Italian music, died on August 22, 2023 at around 4 p.m. at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
The death of the singer-songwriter, who had just celebrated his 80th birthday in July, was announced to the ANSA agency by his manager Danilo Mancuso, who explained that“After a long illness, the singer’s state of health had worsened in recent months”.
Toto Cutugno was one of the most popular Italian artists worldwide, winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with his song “Together: 1992”, a ballad that celebrates European political integration and the creation of the European Union. This is the second Italian victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. He was one of the hosts of the following year’s competition, held in Rome.
He was also one of Italy’s most popular songwriters, having written for artists such as Joe Dassin, Dalida, Adriano Celentano and Domenico Modugno. Toto Cutugno was considered a true ambassador of Italian music in the world, especially in countries like Romania, Spain, Turkey, Germany and Russia. His song “The Italian“, released in 1983, has been translated into many languages and is considered a symbol of Italian culture and identity.
Toto Cutugno participated fifteen times in the Sanremo music festival, but he won only once, in 1980, with the song “Only U.S”. He also came second six times, with songs such as “Serenade“, “Children“, “Emotions” et “Mothers“.
