The German writer Martin Walser died in his hometown of Überlingen, on the border with Switzerland, where he had lived since the late 1960s. In Germany he was regarded as one of the great post-war writers, but abroad he was less well known than contemporaries such as Günter Grass or Heinrich Böll.
