Brigitte Bardot, icon of the screen and symbol of the 60s, celebrates an incredible 89 years on September 28. Although she found her peace as she got older, she did not have it easy in her youth. What has fate prepared for this French actress?

Childhood in the shadow of wealth

She was born into a mobile Parisian family. From the material point of view, she was very well provided for. Her parents gave her and her sisters education at private schools, singing lessons and ballet lessons, all under the supervision of the best choreographers. At first glance, it might seem that she had everything she could wish for. But the reality was different. In fact, the actress suffered emotionally throughout her childhood.

Her parents were very strict, they required their daughters to poop on them, any emotional expression was taboo. Such an environment left a deep mark on young Brigitte. She later suffered from depression and a lack of self-confidence, despite her beauty and talent, accompanied her almost all her life.

The first marriage and the journey to the movie screens

Filmmakers soon became interested in the young Brigitte, who was engaged in modeling. The most active was the future famous director Roger Vadim, who managed to bring the beauty to the altar in 1952. In order to get her parents’ approval for the marriage, he did not hesitate to convert from Orthodoxy to Catholicism. Thanks to Vadim, Brigitte became a blonde. He talked her into having it dyed, and she stuck with blonde. The blond mane thus became one of her distinguishing marks.

The beginning of her acting career was not interesting. The real hit came in 1956, when she starred in her husband’s film And God Created Woman, which immediately shot her to the top of popularity. She definitely became a leading European film star as well as a fashion icon whose dressing style was copied by millions of women around the world.

Fight with glory

In the 1960s, it was enough to say her initials and all men suddenly found themselves in ecstasy. Brigitte Bardot, together with Marilyn Monroe, became probably the biggest sex idol of all time. In fact, she never wanted such a portion of fame.

She originally wanted to pursue ballet instead of acting, but she was not allowed to because of her relatively tall figure (she measures 166 centimeters). She had a hard time bearing the media hunt on her person. She desperately missed an ordinary quiet life.

And she wasn’t happy even in private. The marriage with Vadim began to have cracks, and in 1957 came a divorce. Brigitte hit rock bottom and (far from the last time) attempted suicide – she overdosed on sleeping pills.

The search for “Mr. Perfect” and the end of a career

The actress then tried very hard to find a suitable partner for life, as she was desperate for love, but unfortunately in vain. Although many men passed through her life and she married three more times after her first divorce, none of the unions lasted.

The relationship with actor Jacques Charrier lasted three years. They managed to get married and have a son. And her third marriage, which she concluded in 1966 with a wealthy German, Günther Sachs, also lasted three years.

She was not doing well in private life and she was also not doing well in the film field. The quality of the films in which she appeared went down, some of them were even labeled as flops and disappointments. In 1973, therefore, she appeared in front of the cameras for the last time.

How is the actress doing today?

Her path to fame was successful, but also challenging and cost her a lot of strength and personal suffering. And even though she left her film career relatively early, her next ventures presented her from a completely different angle. Brigitte Bardot has been determined to fight for animal rights all her life and is committed to the protection of nature. At the same time, she proved to be a skillful investor and is not afraid to express herself on political topics. Since 1992, she has been married to French politician Bernard d’Ormal, who is seven years her junior, with whom she is still today. She finally found love.
