Anda Burtniece was born in 1931 in Riga in a family of teachers. In 1941, together with her family, she was deported to Siberia and returned to Latvia in 1946. After graduating from the Cēsi Teachers’ Institute (1954), A. Burtniece began her professional career by working as a teacher in Dobele and Riga, writes the publication “Kroders.lv”.
In 1961, Anda Burtniece graduated from the Faculty of Theater Science at the A. Lunacharska Institute of Theater Arts in Moscow. Since then, she has actively published articles and reviews, several scientific monographs have also been written – “Antra Liedskalniņa” (1984), “Lūcija Baumane” (1988), the almanac “Theatre and Life” (1967-1968) compiled together with Māri Grēviņa. In the critic’s publications, it can be felt that she has always left herself a bit on the sidelines, allowing theater artists to stand out.
A. Burtniece’s most significant contribution to Latvian theater science is associated with the magazine “Teātra Vēstnesis”. A. Burtniece was the editor-in-chief of the magazine from 1996 to 2012, creating a high-quality theater publication in times of change.
Awarded the Cross of Merit in 2007.
