The Libyan Coast Guard detained nearly 1,000 migrants in two days

Among the migrants were children, women and men.

The Libyan Coast Guard detained nearly 1,000 migrants to Europe off the country’s west coast in two days, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday.

“In the last 48 hours, the Coast Guard and Coast Guard have detained and returned almost 1,000 migrants to Libya,” said the Libyan branch of the IOM.

According to AFP, a spokeswoman for Safa Msehli wrote on Twitter that the migrants included children, women and men.

“IOM teams were present at all landing sites to provide the necessary assistance,” IOM said in a statement, warning that migrants could be subject to “arbitrary detention.”

According to the IOM, most of the detained migrants are transported to centers where conditions are unfavorable and continue to deteriorate.

More than 1,200 migrants died in the Mediterranean in 2020, according to IOM data.
