The LG OLED B3, C3 and G3 debuted at CES 2023, the tech show in Las Vegas. The biggest innovation is called Brightness Booster Max and is expected to deliver 70% higher brightness, up to 1,800 nits. However, Booster Max is only available for some models.
In 2022, LG was challenged by Samsung in the OLED market. Samsung has combined OLED technology with Quantum Dot technology to deliver higher brightness and more saturated colors. Now LG is preparing to counter with new OLED panels that will significantly increase brightness. LG’s new panels are expected to offer 70% higher brightness in the flagship OLED G3, at least when compared to LG’s regular OLED panels. The details are a little unclear, but if we are to try between the lines, this is not a 70% improvement over the OLED Evo panels that were last year’s top of the line. Rather, we’re talking about an actual improvement of around 40 percent over, say, the LG OLED G2. It’s still very impressive and one of the biggest improvements we’ve seen on an OLED generation. In more absolute terms, a spokesperson said the new models should be able to hit 1,800 nits, according to FlatpanelsHD. The most popular models, the OLED C3 and B3, don’t offer the same new panel, but they’re expected to perform in class with last year’s models.
LG’s new generation of OLED TVs includes the long-awaited bestseller OLED C3 but also the wall-mounted OLED G3, which will now come with an even slimmer wall mount. All models are equipped with an updated α9 AI Processor Gen6 to process the image, and webOS has been updated with a new interface that is supposed to divide apps into categories for, for example, games, sports and television. All new models are also the first to feature QMS-VRR technology built into HDMI 2.1a to avoid black picture periods that can occur when an image source switches frame rates.
Among the new models, it’s the LG OLED, aka the G3, that gets the bright new panel, which LG Display calls OLED EX. The G3 is sold in 55, 65, 77, 83, and 97-inch sizes, but the higher brightnesses are only available in 55, 65, and 77-inch sizes. The LG C3 retains the same panel type as the LG C2 and is available in sizes of 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches. The LG Z3 has 8K resolution and is sold in 77-inch and 88-inch sizes.
LG’s new OLED models will be launched in the spring. Prices are still unknown.
