The Lexus LF-ZC: A Premium Electric Limousine with Impressive Features and Future-Proof Design

The exhibition areas of the Tokyo Motor Show are extremely varied this year. There is a constellation of domestic car manufacturers, including Lexus, which, among other things, brought two brand new LF (Lexus Future) electric concepts. The abbreviations ZC and ZL probably don’t tell you much, so let’s introduce them in more detail.

The Lexus LF-ZC is profiled as a premium electric limousine that will arrive on the market in 2026 and wants to compete with, for example, the BMW i4 or the upcoming Audi A4. At a time when automakers are chasing SUVs and crossovers of various shapes and sizes, the preservation of the traditional body concept in the menu is definitely great news. However, Lexus is aware of today’s trends, so the vision of an SUV with the designation LF-ZL must not be missing.

But let’s get back to the limo. Although it did not specify detailed technical parameters, it nevertheless talks about new generation batteries with higher energy efficiency, which should offer double the range compared to today’s electric cars. According to the creators, the highest specification should travel up to 1000 kilometers on a single charge, but variants with smaller batteries will also be available.

Lexus isn’t afraid of that. Although it’s just a concept, something tells us the production car launched in three years will be similarly daring.

The concept is 4,750 mm long, so it is slightly shorter than the Lexus ES. In addition to the low silhouette, the aerodynamic design is impressive, thanks to which it was possible to achieve a drag coefficient Cx of 0.2, which is an extremely impressive figure. Drivetrain details remain a secret, but Lexus says there will be single-motor, rear-wheel-drive variants, as well as a four-wheel drive with an electric motor on each axle.

And the cabin? She herself is like from another world. Modeled after the Lexus RZ, the production Lexus LF-ZC will be equipped with a steer-by-wire system that does not rely on a traditional steering column, but driver instructions are transmitted purely electronically to the wheels. The multimedia display is located in front of the passenger, the driver can see all important information on the display behind the steering wheel, or it is projected directly onto the windshield.

The production car is expected to share architecture with other electric Lexuses and Toyotas. The platform is modular and suitable for a wide range of cars, at the same time it allows for a variety of drive arrangements. Lexus also uses this technique to highlight a number of design elements that significantly reduce the overall weight, which comes in handy in the case of an electric car.

And the pearl at the end? Although it is a luxury electric limousine, it could also offer a manual transmission! You heard that right, Toyota and Lexus are developing a manual for electric cars that should make the driver feel the much-vaunted mechanical connection to the car. We are curious ourselves!
