The Legendary ZAZ-1102 ERF-Mobile: A Hidden Gem in the World of Rally Cars

ZAZ-1102 “Tavria”, born in 1986 during the heyday of the Soviet automobile industry, was a compact, reliable and affordable car that gained enormous popularity. It appealed to a broad market, including young drivers and families. However, among the sea of ordinary everyday cars, a hidden gem has emerged: the ZAZ-1102 ERF-Mobil, a rally car designed to compete with the giants of motorsports.

The history of the ZAZ-1102 ERF-Mobile began in Tallinn, Estonia, where a local team of enthusiasts began implementing an ambitious project. They aimed to transform the little Tavria into a formidable rally car, capable of challenging established rivals such as the Lada EVA with its impressive 300 horsepower.

Creating such a powerful rally car was no small feat even for experienced engineers. The transformation of the conventional ZAZ-1102 was amazing. A new 1.8-liter engine was introduced, complemented by a special suspension, tubular frame and lightweight plastic cladding. These modifications gave the car significant advantages on the track. The result was an incredible 217 horsepower packed under the hood, which is a remarkable achievement considering the Tavria’s small frame.

Unfortunately, the story of the ZAZ-1102 ERF-Mobile took an unexpected turn. The Group B rally rules were scrapped, making the project obsolete. Despite this setback, the team managed to build two of these powerful machines, leaving the third unfinished. Although the competition they planned did not take place, the legend of the ZAZ-1102 ERF-Mobile is alive. One of these remarkable cars has been lovingly restored and now takes pride of place at the Tallinn Motorsport Museum, ensuring that the history of this remarkable rally car continues.
