Yes, there were times when VW produced such a limousine, which consistently surpassed even a Mercedes S-Class W220 of its time. And it is impressive not only the fact that there was a VW Phaeton in the history of the German brand, but also the engines they benefited from. And today we are talking about a car with the most formidable of them. Yes, it’s a 6.0-liter W12-powered VW Phaeton now on sale in Germany.
Yes, it is about that famous W12 engine, of the VW group, about the engineering of which we published a few months ago detailed article, in which I mentioned how this got under the hood of several Audi, VW and Bentley models, and how the W16 engine from the Bugatti Veyron evolved on it. That’s how special it is!
And on the VW Phaeton, it appeared in a naturally aspirated version, where the 12 cylinders worked almost resting. On the first versions, the engine developed 420 HP from its 6.0 liters, and this car is one of the first products with this engine.
The car is packed with options and technologies that you couldn’t find in other VW models and that were offered optionally or not at all even on competitors of premium brands. The Phaeton W12 had superbly soft air suspension, and at the same time exemplary handling, which could keep the car at over 300 km/h in an exemplary target, although the speed was limited below. The car had all-wheel drive and all kinds of small comfort attributes, designed to ease your life on board.
And at the constructive level, it was one of the last cars in history, which generously applied the idea of overengineering, when everything is designed with huge resistance reserves.
The car we’re talking about today has 109,000 km covered, documented, and is registered right in the city of Wolfsburg, where VW has its headquarters. And with how well documented the owner is in the deep history of this car and its creation, we have reason to believe that it is someone employed at VW, although the German does not display this fact.
It is as clear as possible, however, that this VW Phaeton is in impeccable condition, with minimal, almost non-existent, signs of wear. Therefore, it is one of those jewels that has kept its original special luster and today it can be enjoyed from the first day, without the need to revive or restore it, but rather just to keep it with the same selflessness going forward.
And it’s one of the few collector’s cars in which, in other words, you can be chauffeured, if you want. But certainly the temptation to drive a W12 is greater.
How much does it cost? Considering how rare the W12 versions are, how well-preserved this car is and how quickly the prices for such Phaetons go up, the price is relatively moderate, at 35,900 euros. It’s more than it was 3 or 5 years ago. But we can imagine how much these cars will cost in 2035 for example, when such engines will remain only a distant history, told almost like a legend, which half of those who listen to it will say that it cannot be true. And this car is proof that there was a time in history when such brilliant engineering creations were created at VW.
