Werder Bremen against HSV: Most recently, the legendary northern derby could only be seen in the 2nd league. But for a long time it was also a top game in the Bundesliga. The duel first took place there 60 years ago today, on October 12, 1963.

Werder’s dream start – Dörfel and Seeler shorten the score for HSV
But Bremen got off to a tailor-made start. In the tenth minute, Dieter Seeler underestimated a bouncing ball, Gerhard Zebrowski was there and beat Hamburg goalkeeper Horst Schnoor. Four minutes later, goalscorer Arnold “Pico” Schütz increased the score to 2-0.
The home team is the superior team. In particular, the right side of the attack with Zebrowski and Bundesliga debutant Dieter Thun is difficult for the Hamburg team to get under control. Gert Dörfel (25th) and Uwe Seeler (55th) can reduce the deficit twice for HSV. But Schütz is the man of the day this Saturday. Bremen’s center forward completed his hat trick with goals in the 47th and 79th minutes – Werder won 4-2. His second goal shortly after the break was particularly worth seeing.

A week later, Seeler’s anger has disappeared. HSV beat 1860 Munich 5-0 in front of 55,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion, “Uns Uwe” contributed three goals to the success. The next northern duel is on the agenda for Werder. In Braunschweig the Green-Whites got a 1-1 draw. Both teams ended the first Bundesliga season in midfield. HSV comes sixth, Werder takes tenth place.
