It did not drag: announced last week, the remake of Myst is now available on theApp Store ! Soberly called Myst Mobile, it is a port of the 2021 version (released on Mac, PC and consoles) which retyped from top to bottom this game which debuted in 1993.
30 years after its release, has Myst aged? We find the mysterious and bewitching atmosphere of the original title, which makes us land on a strange island on which we will not meet anyone. If you’ve never played Myst, know that it’s a very quiet adventure game: you’ll have to comb the map before putting all your observations flat. It will then be necessary to think of a way to solve the various puzzles, all allowing to advance the plot.
The graphics have been completely revised for this remake, which runs very well on the iPhone 14 Pro (that’s lucky!). The sets are splendid and the sound effects have been reworked. Everything is perfectly practicable by putting all the graphic cleats to the bottom, even if we feel that the FPS drop in very open environments. We quibble, and it’s not really a problem for this title anyway very slow and which will not put your reflexes to the test. Myst requires a device with an A12 Bionic chip and will therefore run on an iPhone XS or iPad 8, although the graphics may need to be scaled down.
The game’s controls adapt quite well to touch. It is not unpleasant to move on the island, even if it will necessarily be more practical on the big screen of a Max model. Several options are available, for example to adjust the sensitivity or to quickly switch to vehicle movements / when climbing a ladder. The title is suitable for controllers (it works perfectly with an Xbox pad) and should also work with a keyboard / mouse combo or Apple’s accessories for iPad like the Magic Folio. We would have liked the possibility of exporting photos taken with the game camera!
The game is free to download, but it will cost you €12 as an in-app purchase to unlock all areas. It’s a rather well thought-out model, because it will take you several hours to overcome the first island. It will also be ideal to see if the very calm style of this game multiplying puzzles and other brain teasers appeals to you.
