The legendary governor of the CNB says goodbye. Definitely now

The Czech National Bank will terminate the validity of older banknote designs from 1995 to 1999 in a year. Unlike the new ones, they have a narrow silver stripe, the color of which does not change when tilted. The central bank is already gradually withdrawing them from circulation. Their exchange will be indefinite. The CNB informed about it in its own right the web. Older banknotes expire on 1 July 2022.

“The aim of this step is to have only one banknote of one design in each denomination of commonly used banknotes from CZK 100 to CZK 2,000,” said Oldřich Dědek, a member of the Bank Board. If there is only one design in circulation, this will speed up, for example, the machine processing of banknotes at the CNB. According to Dědek, uncertainty will also be reduced as to whether older designs are valid and not counterfeit.

As of June 30, 2022, therefore, the validity of CZK 100 banknotes of the 1995 and 1997 designs, CZK 200 of the 1996 and 1998 designs, CZK 500 of the 1995 and 1997 designs, CZK 1,000 of the 1996 and CZK 2000 designs of the 1996 and 1999 designs will expire. 2018, 200 CZK model 2018, 500 CZK model 2009, 1000 CZK model 2008, 2000 CZK model 2007 and 5000 CZK model 1999 and 2009.

Only for five thousand crowns, two patterns will still be valid, for other banknotes it will be only one pattern.

“We decided to inform the public about this intention a year in advance and we believe that in everyday life, citizens may not even notice this change in a year, because the CNB continuously eliminates older models as part of cash control during its processing,” Dědek added. He advised people to pay with banknotes in the next 12 months as usual, the CNB will replace the older ones with new ones.

Unlike the newer ones, the withdrawn banknotes have a narrower vertical silver stripe, which serves as a security element. Its color remains the same even when tilted, while with newer banknotes it changes color from brown-violet to green. The individual patterns are also distinguished by the year depicted on the obverse and some other protective elements.
