The Legendary Drop Resistance and Long Battery Life of Nokia 3310: A Nostalgic Journey

Snake, multi-story drop resistance, and a week of battery life

Nokia 3310 is the heroine of countless memes, in which, among other things, it is mentioned legendary drop resistance. And it’s true, the 3310 was hard to drive up, but even a fall from a small height usually ended disintegration of the housing — the front panel, the battery cover, the battery, the phone itself and the keyboard had to be found in the grass or on the pavement. But it was enough to pick it all up and she was as good as new, and if she hit too hard, you could buy a new cover for half free instead of a case.

It was a fact too long working time — it may not have been record-breaking compared to other phones, but these average 7 days of work still now cause envy.

No i was Snake – the snake game brought as much pleasure as frustration, but it became a hallmark of all Nokia phones and years ago, conversations about the phone often began with the question “Do you have a snake?”.

Keypad phones in 2023? There are, but only October

At launch Nokia 3310 cost PLN 800. Little? The minimum wage in Poland in 2000 was PLN 700 gross. That is… however, not so little. Converting this to the minimum wage in 2023, the phone would now be worth PLN 4,114. This is the current premium level, maybe its lower zones, but still.

And it’s probably less surprising in that perspective current keyboard phones simply have a chance to compete with the Nokia legend. Waste goes to a modern phone for PLN 200-800while the Nokia 3310 in 2000 was the result of long engineering work and the accumulation of all the technological wealth we had at the time.

Current keyboard phones must now also have VoLTE, or at least that’s what operators assume when introducing equipment to the offer. On the one hand, it’s good, because the quality of calls and range are increasing, on the other hand, squeezing out the weekly working time becomes unrealistic.

This is due to newer processors, small but colorful screens, far from record battery capacities and not fully optimized operating systems of classic phones. 0.5 GB of RAM in a simple phone? In the times of 3310, these were truly server values. “128 MB of RAM will soon become the standard for every gaming PC,” reads a German guide from 2000.

Perhaps it is better to impair the functions of the smartphone …

At the beginning of the year, I exchanged my father’s good Cat B100 for its seemingly successor – the Cat B40 model. I cared that the phone has 4G connectivity, since operators started to disconnect 3G connectivity. And unfortunately, instead of 5-6 days of battery life (okay, 3-4 after it reaches the battery), the phone you have to recharge every other day at best.

What is worth adding, the Cat B40 was one of the more expensive items among the classics – PLN 450 is the upper register for this segment of equipment. I’d be willing to pay a lot more for a decent dealbut these are simply not available in Polish stores.

I’m slowly starting to wonder if it might not be better to turn it on sometimes extreme power saving mode in some decent smartphone, instead of messing around with electro-waste. And here the equipment may look somehow … or at least until the first fall. The real Nokias are gone, Ladies and Gentlemen.
