As crazy as it sounds, where there’s a will, there’s a way. And from a maniac who specializes in Doom, nothing less could be expected.
We are of course talking about the legend of Doom, the holder of many records and the person (probably) who can finish even the hardest and longest levels in one go without saving the position. Well, who else but Zero Master, right? This fighter is characterized by incredible patience, total knowledge of the game, engine, limits and analytical thinking. And that helped him complete the last level of the first episode of the original Doom from 1993 to one hundred percent.
If you remember, at the end of this level, the player is teleported into a dark room full of monsters, and at the same time, the floor has a property that deals 20% damage to the player. The result is always the end of the level as soon as the guy’s health drops below 10%. This combined with aggressive monsters basically makes it impossible to get 100% of all kills, there’s no time for that. The speedrunner community around Doom agreed that it was an impossible challenge, so level E1M8 was an exception until today, which was considered complete even with less than 100% kills.
But. Zero Master being Zero Master, he wrote a script that tried the last room over and over again, thousands of times. From those he then distilled one usable strategy. And finally, thanks to careful planning, luck (or RNG, random number generator, the way Doom calculates damage, hit chance, etc.) and his mastery, he managed to complete the E1M8 level at 100% for the first time in history. An absolute lunatic.
