The legal case of Michael Montigny, the Septilien who hit the headlines in August 2022, filming himself chasing moose aboard his pick-up, will stretch further.
The individual’s lawyer, Me Jean-Luc Desmarais, requested a postponement until December 18 in his client’s two cases, he who was due to appear today (October 10).
The argument for the new deadline is the volume of the file to be processed for the charge of having “unnecessarily caused an animal to suffer”. The maximum penalty for this offense is 5 years’ imprisonment.
Michael Montigny is also accused of chasing a big game animal with a vehicle, a charge under section 27 of the Act respecting the conservation and development of wildlife. For this offense, he is liable to a fine ranging from $2,500 to $12,500.
The charges against the 33-year-old man date back to August 2022. He filmed himself behind the wheel, while chasing young deer in his van. In the video shared widely on social media, he appears to literally ride over one of the beasts twice.
Following the disturbing events, an online petition was launched to call for tougher laws and penalties in cases of violence against animals. More than 177,000 signatures were collected.
